The Museum's COLLECTION PAGES

Technical descriptions will generally be covered in these pages: general information about history and usage will be found in our INDUSTRY PAGES.
COLLECTION SUMMARY
with fuller descriptions for each division and section.
MACHINES DIVISION INDEX
TYPESETTING MACHINES SECTION: machines which produce metal type, composed ready to print. The Linotype: a linecaster, using a keyboard to arrange recirculating matrices
Intertype: identical in function to the Linotype
Ludlow: a linecaster using hand-set matrices
Nebitype: identical in function to the Ludlow
Monotype: a typecaster which makes new single types composed ready to print
TYPECASTING MACHINES SECTION: machines which produce single types in bulk, for hand typesetting. Monotype Supercaster: similar in principle to the Monotype Composition caster, but makes the one letter until interrrupted: produces type up to 72 point body, also rules and continuous borders.
Thompson Type Caster: makes types up to 36 point body.
Trader Horn Typecaster: a hand operated casting box adjustable for type bodies up to 72 points.
PRE-PRESS EQUIPMENT SECTION: Computer typesetters and other items which produce lettering or images on film or paper; cameras, platemakers, processors: items which produce or handle images for photo-based printing. Cameras: various brands and vintages of process camera. These are used to make large format negatives or bromides from artwork.
Desk-Top Publishing: based on PC's or MacIntosh computers, these systems bring good typography to everyone's desktop.
Phototypesetters: There were several processes and many different systems by which an operator could produce high quality letter-forms on film. They were not all electronic.
Monophoto System: Produced by the Monotype Corporation as their answer to phototypesetting: earliest models functioned just like the Monotype Composition Caster but put an image on film instead of pumping molten metal.
Platemakers: Some produce a plate direct from artwork; others make it from a negative.
Processors: these are automatic developing units to develop the films and bromides output by cameras and phototypesetters.
Strike-On Typesetters: These are like high-quality typewriters, and capable of producing justified text with variable spacing.
PRINTING MACHINES SECTION: Letterpress platen and cylinder presses and proofers; Offset presses, photocopiers. Label press. Hot Foil Stamping presses. ADANA Presses: Small presses produced by Adana Printing Machines in England.
xxxxxxxxxxxx: xxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx

OTHER MACHINES SECTION Elrod Stripcaster: makes strips of extruded material in typemetal, either rules (typehigh) for printing straight lines or leads (under type high) for spacing between lines of type.
Nebiolo Stripcaster: Identical in function to the Elrod.
Folding Machines: There are two main ways to fold by machine: buckle the paper or use a knife-blade.
Guillotines: Paper Cutters which will handle a pile several inches high
Other Paper Devices: like joggers, round cornerers, drills, punches, laminators
Stitching or Stapling Machines: Staplers use pre-formed wire pieces; stitchers make their own from a roll of wire
Stereotype Equipment: Stereotyping press, casting box, backplaner etc., for making duplicate printing blocks or rubber stamps.
Type-Related Machines: Examples are the machines to make cross-points for rule-formes, to put security patterns onto typefaces, saw or mitre pieces of type-metal or clean and adjust mats.

Educational Program Index

Who wants to learn about traditional printing?

Persons who use new technology for design will benefit from seeing how printing and typesetting was done without computers.

Classes and workshops on traditional printing include:

Visitor Programs

We are not yet open for general visits, but if you really want to have a look around ...

Newspaper Composing Room

This is a future project. A recreated, full-size composing room as would have been found in major papers around the world. The sights, the sounds, the smell, the hustle and bustle . . .

Access Studio

Artists, writers and poets are welcome to use the museum's types and presses.

Letterpress produces a result unobtainable by laser, offset or photocopying. The paper is deformed by the pressure of individual inked letters.

ABOUT US PAGES

How to find us and contact us
(located in Footscray, Victoria )

About these WEB PAGES

We are on the Web courtesy of VICNET. At this time our e-mail facility is not running as it should. Please write, fax or telephone if you don't get a reply.

Our Director, Michael Isaachsen, is compiling this first edition for our site, ably assisted by Alana Wignell. We would be glad of help for later editions. There is much more detail to add.

Many pages are unfinished, and many more yet to be started. Even so, it is hoped that viewers will gain a useful impression of the range of our collection and services, as well as an interesting overview of the craft of `real printing'.
