Patrick Thomas

Graphic designer and lecturer of international repute. Patrick toured Australia in 2008 as AGDA international speaker, and while in Melbourne was introduced to this Museum by a local academic.

"I had the privilege of visiting The Melbourne Museum of Printing during my stay in Australia in April 2008 and was moved by the incredible amount of passion and work that Michael Isaachsen has put into it and his generosity in sharing such an incredible piece of working history with us.

The museum's collection and programs are truly unique and it's quite remarkable that the museum exists today at all. Its value is incalculable and it would be a tragedy for future generations of designers in your country if such a valuable resource were to be be lost.

I live in Barcelona, Spain where the heritage of traditional printmaking processes was lost with the arrival of modern print technology and I cannot begin to explain the huge gap that it has left in Spanish design education and culture.

Once it has gone it can never be reassembled: please do not let the same thing happen in Melbourne."

Martin Stanley

Lecturer and Acting HoD in Printmaking at the National Art School in Sydney NSW. Martin escorted 25 students to Melbourne in 2008 and attended a workshop at the Museum. Martin writes that there is no similar facility in Sydney and that at least two of those students are intending to revisit the Museum to use the studio and Martin will visit again for research.

"As a senior lecturer in the Printmaking Department at the NAS in Sydney I visited the Melbourne Museum of Printing this year with a group of twenty five undergraduate printmaking students. We were on a "printmaker's tour" of Melbourne, visiting galleries, printing suppliers, studios and workshops. The last destination during our stay in Melbourne was the museum.

My students and I had a wonderful educational experience. Your lecture and tour provided a rare and valuable insight into our printing heritage and how it all works. We were also involved on a practical level, with hands-on typesetting and compositing, which the students found very exciting.

A number of my students have since been incorporating type into their undergraduate research projects, and are keen to extend their knowledge in this sadly endangered field. At least two are intending to visit the museum again, to engage in the studio program. I am hoping to visit again to further my research work in typography.

As there is no equivalent facility known to me in Sydney, I will be contacting colleagues in other institutions to suggest similar visits.

I trust that the museum will come to be recognised for its truly valuable cultural and historical significance and be supported by the authorities and industry.

By its collection, access studio and education, the Melbourne Museum of Printing is a unique resource. It is essential for it to thrive and continue providing education and research access in fine printing. Thank you again for the opportunity."
